Tomson Highway - Songs in the Key of Cree
May 11, 2017
Market Hall

Songs in the Key of Cree is a compilation of songs written over the past thirty years by Cree-Canadian playwright/songwriter/pianist Tomson Highway. The songs in the show are taken from five of his musicals over the years, in order: “Rose,” “The Incredible Adventures of Mary Jane Mosquito,” “The (Post) Mistress,” “The Sage, the Dancer, and the Fool” and a new work in progress as yet to be named. What makes the songs unique is their Cree lyrics.

Bboyizm - Music Creates Opportunity
February 11, 2017

Market Hall

In Music Creates Opportunity, Crazy Smooth and his Bboyizm dance company continue to explore themes of personal expression through authentic street dance, and to push the art form at its edges. While Bboyizm's first stage piece, IZM, challenged audiences' expectations of both street dance and the stage, Music Creates Opportunity considers the intersection of rhythm, expression, and community in the making of music and dance.

Bernie Martin - Myrmidon
November 30 - December 3, 2016
The Theatre on King

Partnering with Peterborough performance company Fleshy Thud, and A Certain Place: The Bernie Martin Festival, Public Energy brings back Myrmidon, a theatrical-poetical gem of a performance, written by the late Bernie Martin. Myrmidon is the story of one woman's magical, mystical, and mettlesome journey down a river, through a river, within a river. Written by multidisciplinary local artist Bernie Martin just before his death, this one-act play was originally presented at Peterborough's Union Theatre in 1995 by Writers Workshop Theatre.

FUELED BY PUBLIC ENERGY: PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT FOR ARTISTS

Are you an early-to-mid-career performing artist with a need for professional development?

Can you share your skills with the public through offering a workshop or class?

If the answer is YES to both, consider applying to Public Energy’s Professional Development Support program.

PE will award a number of professional development grants ranging from $1,000 to $2,500. Funding for the program is coming from a one-time Ontario Trillium Foundation project grant.

Artists working in dance, theatre, or interdisciplinary performance are invited to submit a proposal for how they would use up to $2,500 toward furthering their professional development.

Possible uses of the money include but are not limited to:

  • Travel costs and registration fees for attending a conference or festival in order to take professional workshops and/or meet artists working in the field.
  • Any costs associated with hiring specialized teachers, artists or consultants to provide specialized training in any area, ranging from performance techniques and artistic practice to administration, organizational development and marketing. Travel costs for bringing teachers from outside the city are eligible.
  • Acquiring specialized equipment or software to support your work.

Criteria for selecting successful applicants include assessing the impact of the activity on an artist’s career and how well the activity relates to the career goals as stated. The number of successful applicants will depend on the quality of the proposals and on the amounts requested. Please note
that your request may be approved for less than the full amount.

Submission Guidelines
Please submit:

  • A resume or CV
  • A project description up to 500 words outlining your proposed activity. All activities must begin before May 31, 2015. Please describe two things:
o the specific activity you wish to undertake and how it supports your development as an artist or relates to specific goals that will further your career.
o the workshop or class you can offer. This can be one session or multiple sessions. A charge can be made to cover material or venue costs. PE will publicize this activity.
  •  A budget for an amount between $1,000 and $2,500. Eligible costs include:
o registration, workshop, class and training fees
o travel, accommodation and per diem costs for teachers and others providing training and workshops
o travel and accommodation costs for the applicant
o subsistence costs for the applicant based on $50/day. ie: if you are taking 7 days of workshops, you may include $350 for your own living expenses
