Bill James
Public Energy's Artist-In-Residence for 2012-13

Over the 2012-13 season the public will have numerous ways to experience dance the Bill James way. Bill will host pre-show chats with guest artists in the Public Energy season, offer dance classes and workshops, such as Voice & Movement, and work on a new creation to be performed at the Market Hall in April, 2013. More info here.

Bill James is a choreographer and dancer whose 30-year career has taken him across Canada and beyond. He moved to the Peterborough area from Toronto in 2002 to experience life on the farm; since then he has continued to create new work in addition to his involvement with numerous community-based activities ranging from projects for youth to commissioning original work for the troupe Old Men Dancing.

Bill James' residency is supported in part by The Canada Council for the Arts.

Voice and Movement Workshop with Bill James
For all performers - dancers, actors, singers.
Sat, March 23, 11am-2pm at the Theatre on King (159 King St, #120)
Sun, March 24, 11am-2pm at the Market Hall
Cost: $25 for both days. To register, email
This two-part workshop - participants must take both parts - will focus on the use of breath, moving while singing or speaking, and how voice and breath can open the emotional self.  It will touch upon a few extended vocal techniques and methods for blending vocal effects.
Bill has developed a voice and movement technique based on the methods devised by his teacher John Devers.  Devers was an influential American innovator in vocal technique, interested not only in how sounds are made by the vocal apparatus but how sound moves through the body, and its connection to moving the body in space.
