Since graduating from Trent University in 1980 with a degree in Cultural Studies, Bill Kimball has been involved in many aspects of the Peterborough arts community, particularly in the areas of contemporary dance and theatre. He has contributed to the creation of live performance spaces in Peterborough, beginning with City Stage, a performance space operated by Artspace in the early 1980’s and continuing to the present with various renovations and improvements to the Market Hall. In 1994, Bill created a nationally recognized dance presenting program called Peterborough New Dance, and later expanded the mandate to theatre and other forms of performance while changing the name to Public Energy, a name which reflects his desire for the arts to be integrated into public life as much as possible. Bill is currently the Artistic Producer at Public Energy

Victoria Mohr-Blakeney, Performance Curator

Victoria Mohr-Blakeney is a curator and writer with a focus on curating contemporary dance and performance. She has curated/ co-curated performance work in gallery, theatre, and site-specific settings including Harbourfront Centre, CB Gallery, Edward Day Gallery, Artspace, Art Gallery of Ontario, The Citadel, George Brown School of Design, Scotiabank Studio Theatre, Nuit Blanche, and Artsweek Peterborough. Victoria has worked alongside Bridget Moser, Ame Henderson, Peggy Baker Dance Projects, and Dance Collection Danse. She holds an MFA in Criticism and Curatorial Practice from OCAD University. She has published work in Kapsula Magazine, The Dance Current, Toronto Standard, Peterborough This Week, and the Literary Review of Canada. Victoria is the recipient of the 2015 President’s Medal in Criticism and Curatorial Practice from OCAD University. She has presented her research on performance in Canada and New Zealand.

 

Eva Fisher, Administrator

Eva Fisher is Public Energy's Administrator. She also works as the Program Coordinator with the Electric City Culture Council, and as a food columnist for kawarthaNOW.com. She comes to us with a love of performance first fostered in the role of "Jamie at 6" in the 4th Line Theatre's 1993 production of The Moodie Traill. Nowadays she is more comfortable in front of a spreadsheet than an audience. Eva has honed her management and event production skills through her role as General Manager of Kawartha Country Wines and the Kawartha Store. She holds a BScH in Geography with a minor in English from Queen's University.

Public Energy is a cultural catalyst, electrifying the community with powerful dance, performance, and theatre.

About

Public Energy is an animator of contemporary dance, theatre, performance, and interdisciplinary work. We are dedicated to supporting the creation, touring, and presentation of innovative contemporary performing arts, and to developing audiences that are knowledgeable and passionate. As a presenter, Public Energy programs both well-known artists and new artists; develops audiences through a variety of activities including talks, lectures, pre-show chats, artist residencies, and curated programming; participates in national initiatives that move dance forward, such as the CanDance Creation Fund and the CanDance Touring Exchange; commissions and co-commissions new work from significant artists and commits to their presentation; serves as a venue and touring destination for artists; and supports new work and new directions for artists through residencies, and financial and administrative support.

History

Formerly known as Peterborough New Dance, since 1994 we have presented a mainstage series of dance companies and independent choreographers drawn from across Canada, commissioned new work in concert with other Canadian presenters on the CanDance Network, and supported the development of the local dance, theatre and performance community by presenting area artists and arranging specialized classes and workshops.

Curator's Corner

Curator's Corner is a collection of critical, creative and engaged writings on Public Energy's 2016-2017 season performances. The aim of these writings is to give context, pose questions, and provide new points of access to the artistic work produced within our season. I hope these writings can serve as a companion to all those who wish to delve deeper, and explore the breadth and depth of our performance season.

Myrmidon was written by Bernie Martin, directed by Ryan Kerr and performed by Kate Story and Curtis Driedger, with design by Martha Cockshutt at the Theatre on King, November 30-December 3 2016.

Bernie Martin: Prolific Creativity

“There’s something in the throat” performer Kate Story says as she gently touches her neck, perched on the edge of a blue Newfoundland dory, in Myrmidon, landlocked in a black box theatre at Peterborough’s Theatre on King. Myrmidon is the final performance of a two month long interdisciplinary arts festival in the playwright’s name. Dorothea Hines is a PhD student at Trent University whose research centers on performance and activism as well as performative writing practices. Public Energy in Calgary: Highlights from High Performance Rodeo

This year's High Performance Rodeo, Calgary's international festival of the arts organized by One Yellow Rabbit theatre company, celebrates it's 31st season. On behalf of Public Energy I have had the pleasure of attending this year's festival thanks to support from a Canada Council travel grant for arts presenters. I bring you some reflective and interpretive writings on three of the most engaging performances I had the opportunity to experience. A Quiet Moment with Charlie Petch: Mel Malarkey Gets the Bum's Rush

Charlie Cathy Petch is a playwright, actor, spoken word artist, and musical saw player. Petch's new full-length spoken word vaudeville play Mel Malarkey Gets the Bum’s Rush has toured all over Canada and is featured in Public Energy’s current season, coming to the Theatre on King March 29-April 2. Petch has toured nationally as a spoken word artist and member of the League of Canadian Poets. They are widely published, and have had nine plays produced. It was an absolutely pleasure to get to ask Petch some key questions about their work, what motivates them, what inspires them, and how their performance practice continues to grow and evolve.
